Residents of Yarkoi in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have appealed to the government to extend electricity to the community.
The appeal comes at the backdrop of the negative impact the absence of electricity is having on the social and economic lives of the people.
The residents made the appeal during the second annual celebration of the Yarkoi-Mekaa Youth Association Festival on February 19, 2022.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the president of the Association, Mr Choofujie Peter, underscored the importance of the Association.
According to him, YEMYA Festival is a community based initiative that has been instituted, intended to be celebrated every year to promote development and showcase the rich Lobi/Brifor culture to rest of the world.
He therefore urged all youth groups in the Savannah region to follow suit to promote unity and development in their respective areas.
He added since the outdoing of the community Youth Association, they have been able to recruit two community based teachers to assist pupils in the basic school whom are paid through the little offers from the Association accounts.
Through the efforts of YEMYA , CCOD in collaboration with Jaksally has opened a study centre at Yarkoi which in no terms is improving the standard of education in the area, he noted.
The Youth Association expressed gratitude to the Savannah Regional minister for supporting the community basic school with a number of desks to help improve effective teaching and learning while still calling for more support from the minister to uplift the image of the school and the community.
They also appealed to benevolent individuals, groups, and organizations to help renovate the community’s classroom block.
The Primary School has not seen any major renovation since its establishment in 1987.
The Youth Association equally called on the DCE to as matter of urgency help them to dredge their community dam which was constructed in the 1980’s to help in its sustainability which has a major source of water for their domestic animals and irrigational purposes.
