The Deputy Ranking Member of the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament, also Member of Parliament (MP) for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Constituency in the Savannah Region, Hon. Andrew Dari Chiwitey, has rewarded 8 students from basic schools in the area for excelling in the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
These students were drawn from 4 schools, namely Saako Holy Child, Nyoli Rc, Sawla Girls Model, and kulmasa RC JHS.
The decision to award 8 students instead of the usual best 3 emanated from the fact that seven students scored aggregate 10 in addition to one that had aggregate 9 from a private school.
Though the raw scores could have been used to reduce the number to 3 to be awarded, I felt awarding all the 8 would be the best, hence the decision to award the eight instead of the 3.
The MP’s ‘Best Performing BECE Award’ which was instituted in 2017, was to improve BECE results in the constituency.
In this year’s award ceremony held during the 67th Independence Day of Ghana at the Sawla D/A JHS park, the students, from both public and private basic schools, were presented with One Thousand Ghana Cedis each and a certificate each.
Their schools also received certificates for their contribution to modelling these children for Mother Ghana.
These students were drawn from 4 schools, namely Saako Holy Child, Nyoli Rc, Sawla Girls Model, and kulmasa RC JHS.
The MP through his special aid , said when he became the MP for the area, he realised that the BECE results in the basic schools were not the best, hence the need to initiate an award scheme for best performed BECE candidates, stressing that such an undertaking had yielded good results, with the children coming out with excellence in most of the subjects.
Hon. Andrew said, “We’ve done enough in the education sector in this constituency, thankfully, we are beginning to record a dramatic academic success in this District. We must thank education workers particularly, the Director and teachers in the District for the great job done”.
He used the opportunity to commend the teachers and students for making the feat possible.
Many constituents in the area have expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament for contributing significantly towards the success of education in the area.
