The Paramount chief of the Bole Traditional Area Sarfo Kutuge Feso( l), has celebrated the annual new yam festival in a grand style to usher in the new yam for the year, on Wednesday, 29th July, 2020.

Speaking at the ceremony at the his palace, Bolewura Safo Kutugefeso (I) called on all yam famers within his traditional area to reduce the prices of yams and also called on them to increase their yields of yam production so that Bole area will be recognised as a Yam producing hub.

The new yam festival is a cultural based occasion celebrated by the Chief and people of Bole every year.

It is a thanksgiving festival which is celebrated to pay homage to the gods and welcome new yams into the Bole market.

During the celebration people present new yams, fowls and goats to the Bolewura’s palace for sacrifice and prayers.

The new yam festival is celebrated by Gonjas in the Gonja Traditional Area every year for the conclusion of harvest and beginning of a new farming cycle .

The celebration of the new yam festival by the Bole wura means farmers can now  eat and sell their yams in any market within the Bole Traditional Area.

However, the the Overlord and ruler of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Tumtumba Boresa ( l) had earlier celebrated the coming of the new yam for the year.

Traditionally, no one can eat new in the Gonja Traditional Area before the king of the Gonja kingdom.

He is always the first to taste a new yam before all his chiefs in their respective paramountcy’s are allowed to also taste new yam.
