Savannah Region: Media urged to educate the public on covid- 19 vaccines

The media has been urged to use their various medium to educate the public about the Covid -19 vaccination to clear all the doubts concerning the exercise.

Dr. Chrysantus Kubio, the Savannah Regional Health Director, observed that constant sensitization would help people psychologically to clear all their fear and the myths about the jab.

He was speaking at Damongo when the Savannah Regional Health Directorate on Tuesday 18th January 2022, held a media and stakeholder engagement on GIFTS and COVID-19 vaccination role out in Region.

The Directorate brought together representatives of District and Municipal Health Directorate and the Ghana Education Directorate to discuss among others the misconceptions of the public on the covid-19 vaccines and the role of the various stakeholders in the promoting the smooth running of the roll out.

In a welcome address, the Regional health Director, Dr Chrysantus Kubio, said yellow fever is under control in the region but also said there is no meningitis in the region as been speculated as the cases recorded are Nanumba North- cases.

He explained that, the Girl Iron Folic Acid Tablets Supplement (GIFTS) program was introduced as a result of anaemia and public nutritional health purposes for the adolescent girl which is in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.

He said the engagement is to deal with the misconception of the GIFTS and Covid-19 vaccines roll out.

The Regional Nutrition Officer, Mr Brian Kamara, said the GIFTS program is mainly for the girl child because of their monthly mensuration resulting to lost of blood.

He explained that the main element of blood is Iron and without it in your blood one is not able to store enough oxygen which leads to low performance in all aspects of the individual and this usually happen to the girl child and subsequently affects the performance of the girl child in school.

He however said this has met a lot of misconception that is affecting the Role out of the program.

The Regional Disease Control officer Mr Thomas Suri, added that the nation has a target of vaccinating 20m Ghanaians while the Savannah Region has a target of 385,536 population.

However 123,323 are fully vaccinated representing 12.6℅ which is as result of misconception, he noted.

The Regional Director of Health Services however admonished stakeholders especially the media to assist do away with the misconception for smooth role out of the programs.
