A Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Seidu Alhasaan, on Wednesday November 24, 2021 said to ensure a sustainable future for agriculture in Ghana, government must make it more appealing to the youth.

He said there was the need for a well-coordinated branding campaign that would promote and present agriculture and its value-chain among the youth.

Prof Alhasaan, in an interview with Yagbon News in Bole on Wednesday, called on government to design and pursue educational programmes that would sensitize the youth on the competitiveness of employment in agriculture.

He made the call when Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Economic Policy Competence Centre (EPCC), a German based NGO in collaboration with Youth Advocacy on Right and Opportunities (YARO) organized a 2-day Job Policy Fair for the youth in Bole of the Savannah Region.

He also called for youth inclusiveness in governance.

He told Yagbon News that mobilizing the youth presented a great opportunity for creating an effective platform for participation in the political economy, building resilience of young people, and addressing the root causes of many of the key challenges facing them.

Prof. Alhasaan advised that the government should focus on the area of agriculture if it wants to deliver sustainable jobs to tackle youth unemployment menace in the country.

Prof. said given the enormous amount of arable land available in all parts of the country, it presents the best opportunity for the government to introduce policies that will make agriculture attractive to the youth to minimize youth unemployment.
