The Savannah Regional office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged students of the Bole Nursing and Midwifery Training College as part of the ‘Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism’ campaign in in Bole.
Addressing the students at the old school campus, the Savannah Regional Director of NCCE Mr Issaka Zitor, said the project is aim at preventing and Containing violence extremism.
He said EU decided to support NCCE especially in the Northern part of Ghana and flash points in the country where there could be violent extremists.
He said this has never happened in Ghana and was heard far away in other continents but now we have this in neighboring countries including Nigeria, Burkina Faso among others.
He said the development has caused for worry because refugees are now seeking for refuge in Ghana as a result of the activities of these violent extremists.
He said there is need to engage students to understand these issues to support the security agencies because security is a shared responsibility.
In a short presentation, the Bole District second in Command of the Ghana Immigration Service Supt. Edem Addison Ahiakporsaid young people should be wary of these violent extremists because they are smart.
He admonished that if one sees something strange, he or she say something about it.
He mentioned Boko harram, Alkaida among other groups who use misinterpretation of the Islamic religion to cause mayhem adding that one should not just hear anything from his Imam or Pastor and blindly and follow but should put reasoning ducy messages.
The District Police Commander for Bole District DSP Benjamin Buxton,said one cannot inherit a gun from a family unless the gun goes through processes.
He said people just buy guns in the name of protecting themselves but easily use them in any little provocation.
He however said people with criminal records are not allow to use gun and the ministry of interior has a way of detecting such individuals.
The District Police Commander added that if so many people have private guns in the system violence extremism will be difficult to control.
