The Savannah Regional Peace Council has charged community leaders to work together to manage, resolve and prevent localised conflicts and lead advocacy to strengthen social cohesion, as part of efforts to prevent a spillover of activities of violent extremists.
The Savannah Regional Peace Council made this know during a two day sensitization workshop for stakeholders held in Bole.
The stakeholders included chiefs, queen mothers, religious leaders, the fulbe, youth among others.
These stakeholders were taken through violence extremists ,their effects , how they operate, the responsibility of the citizen in stopping these extremists from their operations among others.
Addressing the media the Savannah Regional Chairman of Peace Council council Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh said the exercise is necessary to create public awareness.
The Bole Martyrs of Uganda Parrish Priest said though there is relative peace in the Savannah Region however he stated that the situations are still fragile due to chieftaincy conflict, tribal conflict, influx of fulbe headers and crop farmers conflict among others he mentioned.
He stated that there are 62 youth groups of which others are political which may spark violence at any time.l
Fr .Lazarus stated our borders are porous which give these extremists the opportunity to infiltrate this area.
He explained that poverty and joblessness expose our society especially the border communities of the Bole District.
He added that these people normally entice the youth with some financial support especially in “Atea” camp and infect them with these radical ideologies.
So with all these threats if we sensitize our citizens to be well aware of these extremists we continue to be at peace Father Lazarus Annyereh asserted.
He said he believes that with the engagement the message will go far and wide so that when people see certain strange people they will report to them to the appropriate quarter’s.
