Stakeholders involved in the UK- Ghana Gold Programme has held a one year round table appraisal discussion in the Bole District of Savannah Region.
The programme started in 2023 with the aim of sanitizing the mining sector for economic prospects of noth Ghana and the UK.
These include crime, illegal immigrant,smuggling of Gold ,licensing among others that affect the progress of mining sector.
The stakeholders included representatives of UK High commission, DISEC,Bole District Mining Committee, District Assembly,Bole Traditional council, EOCO, Media among others .
Addressing the Media the Vice Chairman of the District mining committee Mandariwura Gilbert Abubakari Iddi said the focus of the discussion is on impact of mining on security and local development.
Mandariwura said they are looking at strategies to deal with irregular migrants who may even be terrorist but involve d in mining which Mandariwura says their activities has the tendency to distract the peace of area.
Another issue is the prudent harnessing of funds from mining into one account for local development including healthcare, education among others.
The District Coordinator of UK-GHANA Gold programme in Bole District , Benjamin Larbi said the programme was launched in Accra to sanitize the mining sector.
He said since the program started they have chalked a lot of successes including sensitizing small scale miners which they have testified that it has impacted their lives adding that the committee has testified that their activities had positive impact.
It has also being testify that over 12 buying companies has registered with Precious Mineral Marketing Company without challenges.
Benjamin said the way forward is to train the stakeholders on financial irregularities in the mining sector too.
