Monetization of politics dangerous for Ghana -Issah Aminu.

The Deputy Director of Communication of the Bole-Bamboi constituency for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Issah Aminu,  has called for a holistic solution to the monetization of politics in the country.

The communicator believes the act is dangerous for our politics and if not checked would affect the development of Ghana.

Speaking to Diwura Abdul Fataw on Yagbon radio morning show, Aminu said, the monetization of politics cuts across all the various political parties in Ghana.

He told the host that, the monetization and influence of voters with gifts is dangerous and if care is not taken, it will worsen corruption in the country.

He called on party supporters not to allow themselves to be influenced with money before voting for people but vote for people who are competent and help shape their parties and Ghana as a whole.

‘’It is a very dangerous trend for politics. If we don’t take care, the future is going to be corrupted by this trend whether in NDC, NPP,  PPP or CPP.  We are getting to a point where we are monetizing the system and it will be dangerous for this country,’’ he added.

Aminu made these remarks in reaction to comments made by the former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, who shed light on the dangers of the politics of ‘moneycracy’ and its detrimental impact on Ghana’s democracy and pervasive corruption.

Delivering a lecture during the 2nd R. S. Blay Memorial lectures, under the theme “Consolidating Democracy and the Rule of Law in Contemporary Ghana: If Justice R.S. Blay were with us using the Law as An Instrument of Social, political and economic engineering,” Prof. Oquaye expressed his concerns about the current state of politics in Ghana.

Prof. Oquaye highlighted the shift from a time when politics involved individuals contributing their resources to help the nation, to a disturbing trend where personal gain and acquisition dominate the political landscape.

“What happened to us is that today, politics has become a Moneycracy. Now it is no more a matter of me helping with my resources, but rather, what will I go in and grab, for which matter everything they do today becomes like an investment.

“It is very dangerous and we have to think it through so that politics doesn’t become the preserve of people who buy themselves into it and only to buy themselves out by making money at the expense of the country. We all know that, associated with that moneycratic tendency comes the hole of corruption in our society which has become more and more endemic”, he warned.
