Poor cellular network in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Constituency of the Savannah Region has forced the Member of Parliament, Hon. Andrew Dari Chiwitey to drag the Minister for Communication, Madam Ursula Owusu–Ekuful to parliament to explain steps being taken to improve mobile telephony reception in the area.

According to the MP, residents in a good number of communities in the District can not access telephone calls due to poor cellular network.

He thus, questioned the sector Minister on steps the government through the Communication Ministry is embarking on to improve the situation.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation when the people of Sanyeri, Kaawie and Gbeniyiri will have access to reliable telecommunication services ” Hon Andrew asked.

In response, the sector Minister, Madam Ursula Owusu said, 31 communities in the Sawla- Tuna-Kalba constituency are included the Rural Telephony Project for which 15 such as Gbegu, Goyir, Guryir, Piivuro, Vondiel, Vongbee among others are currently on air receiving telecommunication signals.

According to the sector Minister, GIFEC is yet to build any Rural Telephony project at Gbeniyiri and Kaawie and will consider them in the next phase of the project.

But the MP lamented that he was not satisfied with the answers provided by the sector Minister on grounds that there was no timeline as to when the communities would be connected.

He explained that the poor cellular network in these communities has exposed the residents to armed robbery attacks especially on the Gbeniyiri stretch which has a market which is highly patronised by both indigines and foreigners.

Hon Andrew who sounded very passionate about the issue added that, communities around the border normally get their calls interfered and charges differently and called on the minister to rectify that.

The minister however said that, it has always been like that where interruptions of network are experience within neighbouring countries and said she will put that concern forward before the National Communication Authority.

The MP noted that, he would continue to knock at the doors of the Minister to ensure his constituents have access to mobile telephony.
