Women, involved in the buying and selling of charcoal in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah region have appealed to the paramount Chief and authorities to consider extending the date placed on the ban on the buying and selling of charcoal in commercial quantities in the area.
The charcoal dealers appealed to the Government and Paramount chiefs in the region to extend the banning date which takes effects on May,10, 2021.
Mariama Yussif, who knelt on the floor said the appeal for the extension of the date is to help them convey their charcoal in the bush.
Mariama Seidu, charcoal buyers association organizer also added Sunday 9, marks mother’s day, hence they are appealing to the chiefs to use the mother’s day celebration to extend the date to 3 months to help them get drivers to convey the charcoal from the bush as many drivers have run away with their vehicles for fears of the Security attacking them.
Juliana Gyenfi, added that, they have given monies to loading boys to load the charcoal but due to fears of being arrested by soldiers they have abandoned the work.
Meanwhile many charcoal buyers are still trying to get vehicles to load their goods as the ban on charcoal production in commercial quantities takes effect on Monday, 10, 2021.
The paramount chief of the Buipe Traditional Area, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor Il, has since last month ordered the closure of the Buipe charcoal market in the central Gonja district of the Savannah Region.
Chiefs in the Savannah Region have vowed to fight the menace of illegal mining, illegal logging and burning of charcoal in large quantities as they said such activities depletes the vegetation cover of the land.
