The annual inter-clan Birifor quiz competition of Yagbon radio is set to mark its 6th anniversary with the hope of restoring cultural values among the youth in our communities.

About six years ago, a carefully planned journey began towards improving the cultural values of the Birifor man through an annual inter-clan quiz competition.

We are in an era of cultural pillage and plunder which has led to the relative stagnation and precipitous decline of traditional Birifor cultural pursuits .

With Birifor culturally subjugated and dominated, the Western culture and European mode of civilisation is beginning to thrive and outgrow our cultural heritage.

Traditional Birifor cultural practices are gradually paving the way for foreign ways of doing things as Birifors become fully ‘westernised’. Western culture now is regarded as frontline civilisation.

The Birifor ways of doing things have almost become primitive, archaic and regrettably unacceptable in public domain.

Not only have certain aspects of the material culture lost or destroyed, we have also lost the power and sense of cultural continuity, such that it has became practically impossible to recover the ability to strive for cultural progress on our own terms.

Proficiency in our own language is declining because we are compelled to embrace Western culture and civilization.

Western language has created a caste system in our setting. It causes alienation for people who cannot speak English.

Language been a vehicle of culture, we are in a very serious problem. We must define and design means of helping ourselves out of the hideous quagmire of language and cultural logjam.

Based on the above assessment, compelled the Birifor news team at Yagbon Radio to introduce a catchy, educative, informative program dubbed “annual inter-clan Birifor quiz competition”, held among the four clans within our setting.

With major sponsorship from Madam Vivien Nyoni, the BYA National President and Apostle Dr Moses Sansa Konjon winners of the competition had received prizes to the admiration of our listeners.

The Da clan so far is leading the other clans with two trophies, the Somo has also won one trophy and the 4th edition was also won by the Hien clan.

The Kamire also the 5th edition of competition.

Questions are set from all angles as far as the language is concerned.

This year, we are looking forward to commence the 6th edition in March 22 and are therefore calling on all to support us in any form to help in sustaining our culture.
