HiChale Club, a volunteering group of Kalba based non-governmental organization HiChale, has embarked on a clean- up exercise at Kalba in the Sawla -Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.

The exercise, which was done at the Kalba market , formed part of the NGO’s social responsibility programme to contribute towards good sanitation through the reduction of plastic waste in Kalba.

The group, as part of their planned activities do undertake a sanitation exercise every month, including sweeping and disposal of plastic waste from important installations and facilities within the community such as the health center, market, schools, police station, etc.

Speaking in an interview with Yagbon News , Mr. Mumuni Musaheidu, the President for the club speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of the organization , said there is the need for all to adopt good hygiene practices to help reduce diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhea. He added that plastic waste has been a contributing factor to climate change and this is the Club’s own little way of reducing the impact through the sole sponsorship of HiChale.

He expressed worry about the indiscriminate waste disposal by some community members in the area adding that this was affecting the development of the community because bad sanitation practices are linked to diseases that affect productivity.

He urged the people to desist from littering the public places and advice that community members should develop the habit of properly keeping their plastic waste at home for safe disposal.

Residents of the community applauded the organization for the gesture, adding that authorities should support the operations of the organization to ensure a safe environment.

They complained about the lack of dust bins which is the major reason for littering in the community.
