Tragedy struck Dolinguo, a farming community in the Sannouri Electoral Area in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region on Saturday night, June 17, 2023, as a mud house building collapsed on a family of three, leaving two dead and one severely injured.
The late Mr. Suonyir Boakye Daa-eel (head of the family) believes to be in his 60s and his eldest son Mr. Suonyir Kwabena also in his late 30s were sleeping in the verandah of a local compound house when the mud building suddenly collapsed on them, killing the two on the spot.
However, an eight-year-old primary 3 pupil miraculously survived the tragic incident but is currently battling for his life at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
Residents of the community were left in shock and sorrow at the loss of two lives.
Mr. Suonyir Kwabena had just returned from South ( Kumasi) where was based as a cocoa farmer on the same day to mourn the death of a relative when the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, the building might collapsed due to the weak and unstable mud sticks that were used in its construction.
The eight-year-old primary 3 school pupil, who was sleeping beside his father and brother, was fortunate to escape with his life but suffered severe injuries and is currently undergoing surgery and blood infusions at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
The Assemblyman for the Sannouri Electoral Area, Hon. Robert Niitey Yobier, confirmed the incident to Yagbon News and revealed that it happened around 11 p.m. in the family house while some family members were at a funeral in Sannouri, a nearby community in the area.
Mr. Suonyir Kwabena left behind a wife and six children, who are now struggling to come to terms with the loss of their beloved husband and father.
“The incident should raise concerns about building safety and the need for proper maintenance of buildings to prevent such disasters from occurring.
