On Friday 23 , January 2026, at Gbiniyiri and Dagbigu in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah region went through cleansing rites to appease the gods of the land and to also restore everlasting peace and unity in the area.
Speaking to the Yagbon News ,after the purification, the Chief Priest of the Tuna area, Heuhing Mwiiri Kipo, expressed gratitude to the gods and ancestors of the for accepting the sacrifices and granting peace.
The chief priest, noted that many families, particularly women and children were displaced from their homes, access to healthcare and education was disrupted, and large quantities of farm produce that were due for harvest were left to rot, worsening the economic hardship of affected individuals.
The chief priest has also invoked a curse on anyone who will pick up a weapon to fight on the land.
The Heuhing Mwiiri Kipo, noted that the successful completion of the cleansing represents a renewed commitment to peace, unity and coexistence, and so traditional leaders firmly believe that such a tragic incident would not happen again.
Rev. Father Lazarus Annyereh, a member of the Gbiniyiri Mediation Committee, mentioned that after the problems government put in place a mediation committee and he happens to be a member.
“We got an invitation for the purification today and as my colleagues are far away from Accra and they asked me to represent the committee and am glad to be here and what i have seen tells me that there is the desire for sustainable peace in Gbiniyiri and it’s surrounding areas”.

The Rev. Father, added that from the speech of the land priest urging everybody to lay down weapons and promote sustainable peace in the area.
For us it has resolve part of our problems regarding their assessment and so I will like to say that this is a very strong contribution to the mediation team as far as the dialogue and mediation among the Lobi-Brifor and Gonja group is concerned.
As the Savannah regional chairman of the peace council I have also in a way represented the peace council of the region and think this is very good and the third aspect of it is that as a Catholic priest coming to be part of this just to witness also tells people that the church is interested in the african traditional religion especially religions that promote peace not religions that brings division.
What I have seen here is the promotion of peace and that tells us that we can work together in solidarity so for me it is a real blessing to be part and parcel of this representing the mediation team, the peace council and also the church.
Present at the ceremony were traditional leaders, securities and residents within the communities.
