Hon. Andrew Dari Chiwitey, the Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba constituency, has advised parents not to relent in their efforts to support their children’s education.
He said parents should do all they could to provide the needs of their children to ensure that they grew to become responsible adults to assist in furthering the nation’s development.
Hon. Andrew gave the advice at the launch of the Sawla branch of the Birifor Youth Association held on Saturday, April 23, 2022.
Speaking on the theme of the event” the role of the youth in education and socio-economic development”, he urged parents to show commitment to their wards’ education to make them responsible adults in future.
The Hon. MP said parents should see their wards’ education as an investment to compel them to show bigger commitment to education to enable them undertake such responsibilities dutifully.
According to him, such show of commitment will secure a good future for their wards.
He also assured the association of his full commitment of support to an educational fund to be formed by the association which seeks to support brilliant but needy students in school.
The legislature also used the opportunity to called on parents to consider giving their children traditional names instead of only Islamic or Christian names.
He argued that traditional names given to children will help give them an identity regarding their culture which Christian or Islamic names cannot.
Touching on naming of children, Hon. Andrew said the only way people in the region are able to identify their people is through their names.
He therefore appealed to parents to consider giving their children traditional names stressing that; “we now find a lot of people bearing Christian and Muslim names without local name. One means by which we can identify our people as Birifos is the traditional names we give to our children so let me appeal to all of us to give our kids local names so that we can identify them in accordance with our tradition”.
