The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), has organized a media training and Stakeholders engagement workshop in Tamale to enhance their capacities in the area of their duties.
The workshop is aimed at the Volta Flood And Drought Management ( VFDM).
The VFDM seeks to address vulnerability to water-related disaster and climate change impact in the Volata Basin region, aiming to implement integrated water resources management, reduce natural hazards and enhance adaptation measures to build disaster – resilient communities.
During a welcome address, Hon. Isaac Amoo, the Board Chair of GMet, mentioned that the VFDM workshop stands as a testimony to our collective commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change in the Volta Basin.
This initiative, supported by the Adaptation Fund, reflects our dedication to enhancing flood and drought management strategies for the betterment of our communities.
Mr. Issac Amoo said “The presence of our cherished participants, the media, Agric officers, NADMO, Traders, and fishermen gathered here today is a source of inspiration for all of us”.
Hon. Amoo underscored the urgent need for action and initiatives that provide policymakers with essential information to mitigate the impact of weather on Africa’s economy.
Mr. Eric Asuman, the Director-General of GMet, in his speech mentioned that the VFDM project, financed by the Adaptation Fund, stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of international organizations committed to addressing the challenges posed by climate change in the Volta Basin.
Originally slated for completion in June 2023, the project’s scope has been extended to June 2024, reflecting the dedication to achieving lasting impacts in flood and drought management.
Mr. Eric Asuman noted that under the VFDM project, our collective focus is on enhancing the national response to flood risk information and warnings and this requires improved coordination among national hydro meteorological services, disaster risk management authorities, and other relevant stakeholders.
He added that by fostering increased collaboration, we aim to strengthen the communication and dissemination of hydro meteorological warnings to vulnerable communities, facilitating early action measures.
Again the Director -General said the primary objective of this workshop is to delve into the existing alert dissemination mechanisms and evaluate the communication strategy.
The purpose of the workshop is “Integrating Flood and Drought Management early warning for Climate change adaptation in the Volta Basin”.
The Workshop was sponsored by the Ghana Meteorological Authority (GMet) and the Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO).
