The Member of Parliament for Sawla -Tuna-Kalba constituency,Hon.Andrew Dari Chiwitey has stated that “disability needs not be an obstacle to success” as Ghana marks this year’s National Day for Persons with Disabilities.

Contributing to a statement on the floor of parliament in relation to The Day, presented by the Deputy minister of education,Mr Clement Apaak, the MP said Persons With Disability in Ghana are often regarded as unproductive and incapable of contributing positively to the society.

According to him, “we need to make a conscious and deliberate effort to bring all persons with disability into the developmental mainstream.

Also I believe it is time to come together to diffuse the attitudinal and physical barriers that inhibit the progress of issues relating to disabled persons for better inclusion and equal opportunity”.

The MP blamed metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies for their corporate failure to disburse funds allotted to rehabilitate the physically challenged in the society, thereby compounding their plight.

He said three percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has been earmarked towards the rehabilitation and development of the disabled in the society, which had always been flouted with impunity.

Hon.Andrew called for strict compliance of the provisions that enjoined district assemblies to disburse such resources for the upkeep of PWDs.
