GLYA calls for independentprope into Gindabour disturbances.

The Gonjaland Youth Association (GLYA) has condemned the violent incident at Gindabour in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District that led to the deaths of a teacher and a police officer on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The deceased have been identified as Mr. Seidu Abu, a teacher, and General Constable Redeemer Owusu of the Ghana Police Service.

At a press conference in Bole on Saturday, September 20, the National President of GLYA, on behalf of the National Executive Committee, said the association is deeply concerned about the tragedy, noting that two lives have been lost, two families are grieving, and the community has been traumatised.

GLYA extended its condolences to the families, colleagues and communities of both deceased persons.

Position on the two deaths

GLYA stated that it condemns every form of unlawful killing and violence, stressing that the death of Mr. Seidu Abu cannot be justified and the killing of Constable Owusu cannot be justified.

The association called for a full, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding both deaths, saying it wants the truth established based on facts, not rumours or assumptions.

On the teacher’s death

The association expressed particular concern about the death of Mr. Abu, a member of the Ghana Education Service (GES), following an encounter with police officers.

While acknowledging that investigations are ongoing, GLYA said four key questions must be answered through a credible investigation: what exactly happened during the encounter, what led to his death, whether unlawful or excessive force was used, and whether appropriate procedures were followed.

Concern about GES silence

GLYA expressed disappointment over what it described as the silence of the Ghana Education Service.

According to the association, Mr. Abu dedicated his service to educating children and was part of the GES fraternity, yet there has been no statement from the Service calling on mandated institutions to investigate his death.

GLYA contrasted this with the show of solidarity by the Ghana Police Service for its deceased officer, describing the GES silence as unfortunate. The association said it is not asking GES to prejudge the investigation, but to show institutional responsibility and solidarity.

On the killing of the police officer

On the death of Constable Owusu, GLYA said it is unequivocal in its condemnation, stating that no person or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

The association said anyone who participated in the attack that led to his death must be identified, prosecuted and, if found guilty, face the full rigours of the law.

Reports of Vandalism

GLYA said it is also disturbed by reports of destruction and vandalism of private properties in and around Gindabour, including vehicles belonging to the Paramount Chief of the Kong Traditional Area, Kongwura Adamu Seidu Jinkurige I.

The association said the unlawful acts must be stopped immediately and investigated, stressing that the law must apply equally to everyone.

“If civilians destroyed properties, those responsible must face the law. If security personnel are found to have unlawfully destroyed properties, intimidated residents or abused their authority, they too must face the law,” the President stated.

Call for normalization and protection of civilians

GLYA called on government to take urgent steps to normalize life in Gindabour, saying that as the situation stabilises, the heavy security presence should be progressively scaled down to allow residents to return home, farmers to access their farms, children to return to school and businesses to reopen.

The association called on all security personnel deployed to the area to exercise the highest level of professionalism and restraint, stating that there must be no collective punishment, no indiscriminate treatment of innocent residents, no unlawful destruction of property, and no intimidation or abuse.
