Traders at the Sawla market in the Savannah Region are up in arms against the District Assembly over attempts to relocate them to the newly built market.

According to the market queen mother, madam Hawa Kerosene ,the relocation is not in their interest since the place is not conducive enough for business activities.

The traders argued that, the basic amenities needed for the market to function effectively, were not in place hence their refusal to move.

The traders have also cited insecurity as one of the major reasons why they are refusing to relocate.

They said the new market site was busy and muddy and hence not fit for economic activities.

Another trader Yeboah Sarah stated that some of them have erected containers and cannot afford to get new roofing sheets for new containers.

Some said the new place is engulfed with human excreta and therefore cannot accommodate traders for their activities.

The traders have vowed not to relocate to the newly constructed market if the Assembly fails to ensure it is conducive for business activities, as a number of them were cladded with red banners to resist the relocation exercise.

The traders therefore called on the Assembly authorities to rescind the decision.

Speaking to Yagbon News, Sawlawura Abdulai Nungbasu, said the relocation is long overdue and there is no right time than now.

According Sawlawura he was not happy with the condition of the market since day one of his installment as Sawlawura as he sees the old market to be risky and crowdy.

He called for the relocation for their own safety but they was a delay due to lack of attention by the Assembly.

He was however glad the Assembly had agreed and did some touches and renovation to for the relocation.

He explained how he even met with his traditional cabinet on the relocation and they all assented to it until he met the traders for final discussion.

Sawlawura however challenged any one to compare the new market to the old market to see whether he is taking the right decision or not.

On the aspect of condusive environment, he said every market cannot have all facilities before it starts to be used.

According him he pleaded with them to go there as and when resources are available they will improve upon it.

He however lamented about the politicization of the whole issue.

The Chief urged the people of Sawla to be together on this matter and stated that the date set for the relocation is non- negotiable.

Meanwhile all attempts by Yagbon News to speak to the District Chief Executive on matter proved futile.
