GSS, UNDP train journalists on statistical reporting.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has organized a training workshop for journalists on data interpretation and statistical reporting in Tamale on Tuesday, February, 02, 2021

The training which benefited journalists from the Northern Zone is aimed at helping the media to package statistical information adequately well, for their audience to better understand.

In his opening remarks, the Government Statistician, Professor Samuel K. Annim noted that statistical data churned out by the service usually do not get the needed attention from the media because most of them lack the know-how in statistical reporting therefore the relevance of the nationwide training.

Delivering a presentation on methodology, Mr Owusu Kagya, Head of Census Methodology explained to journalists how the process of the 2021 Population and Housing Census would be mapped out including identification of structures, listing of structures, census night among others.

He urged the media to educate the public on how and when these various will be taking place and to engage the public not to deny census officers of accurate data and also be wary of imposters as census officers will hold ID’s and jackets to suit the project from statistical service.

Mr Kagya also explained there shall be steering committee who will be in charge of the day to day activities in the exercise from national to district levels and hence urged the media to consult such committee for any information.

In a power point presentation Mr. William Addo, Publicity, Education and Advocacy revealed that if a citizen refuses to give an accurate information to a census official that citizen is reliable to a prison term.

He also tasked the Media to hold to the standard of reporting accurately on data for the Service to achieve its targeted aim at the end of the exercise.

Media personalities were drawn from Upper west, Upper East, Oti, North -East and Savannah Region for engagement being funded by GSS and UNDP.
