The Bole District Assembly in the Savannah Region has celebrated this year’s farmers’ day at Sakpa under the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future”, on Friday 5th December 2025.
The Bole MP also serves as the deputy minister for lands and natural resources, Hon. Yussif Sulemana Ori, speaking at the ceremony, said, “the farmers day celebration is a day dedicated to celebrating, rever, and honouring our farmers.
Without our farmers, life would have been very difficult, and so it is only appropriate that we find space to appreciate and recognise them and to also motivate them to do more, “he expressed.
On his part, he acknowledged to address the needs of the people of Sakpa with reference to the speech of the Chairman of the occasion, Jira Sakpawura Ibrahim Bore-enasa Kotiya (5th).
The community lamented and requested for some infrastructure support which include the lack of public toilet facilities, inadequate school furniture for students, lack of telecommunication network, the need for renovation of teachers accommodation, lack of a well-developed dam for agricultural use and the lack of nurses accommodation.
The Mp for Bole assured the good people of Sakpa that before December ends, there will be a contractor at Sakpa to take size for the construction of teachers bungalow, network connection by minister for communication staff will soon commence, and tables and chairs will be donated in few days in collaboration with GETFund.
He added that the Bole DCE will invite the Ghana irrigation authority from Wa to come and locate an appropriate place for the construction of a dam, and also, they are working towards building nurses’ accommodation for Sakpa community.
Hon. Yussif Sulemana Ori expressed his gratitude to the Sakpawura for giving out a piece of land for the construction of the Farmers’ Service Centre, which will recruit more farmers and improve agricultural activities in the Sakpa community. He further appeals to the people of Gonjaland to embrace peace as it enhances development.
He also said that the Bole – Sawla – Tuna – Wa road construction will commence soon.
He again urged the youth to apply for the available security services and also take advantage of the government’s “Nkuko Nkitikiti” initiative.
The Bole District Chief Executive, Hon. Abdulai Mahamud, during his speech, reiterated the theme of this year’s farmers’ day celebration, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”
The theme reminds us of the critical need to take a decisive and collaborative action in safeguarding not only the food that we need but the economy of our nation for prosperity, he said.
During his submission, he stated that feeding our nation requires first and foremost our recognition of the huge agricultural potentials of our nation and undertaking a delebrate and collaborated action to harness these potentials.
Such efforts should seek to adequately empower farmers and fishers by providing them with the inputs they need to make farming less cumbersome but more profitable.
Hon. Abdulai Mahamud recounted that another leg of the theme is the moral responsibility on our part as a people.
That we can not build a truly sustainable local economy if we do not eat what we produce. We have to develop the taste for the local rice, poultry, vegetables, fruits and including our processed foods.
Our preference for such Ghanaian products will empower local industries and create the jobs and wealth needed for the growth of our people and the nation.
He further mentioned that this equally reminds us of the role of agriculture in securing the future of our nation. If the state initiates policies to make agriculture attractive, sustainable, and profitable, it will thrive from generation to generation.
That the theme for this year is in line with government flagship “Feed Ghana Program” which is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2), that is “Zero Hunger”, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, he emphasized.
The Bole DCE urged the people to take advantage of the government’s “Nkuko Nkitikiti initiative.”
He added that the Bole District is part of the list that will benefit from the government’s 50 farmers centres across the country.
He again expressed gratitude to the Sakpawura for donating 20 acres of land for such a project.
That the tree crop diversification project and the carbon credit initiative are also on the pipeline.
According to the Hon. DCE, the Star Ghana Foundation in partnership with the district assembly has constructed 50 garden units in some selected communities to help promote dry-season vegetable cultivation and to make the gardens more viable, Star Ghana Foundation provided 12 pumping machines and water hoses to help farmers water their plants.
He further expressed that Bole District also benefited from a project known as “championing nutrition and gender equality” known as “CHANGE,” which was implemented by two non-governmental organisations funding from Canada. The project has supported vulnerable farmers in 12 communities to cultivate and consume nutrient rich crops.
The district agric director, Mr. Sualey Abubakari, speaking at the occasion, expressed gratitude to all farmers for their contribution to Bole district agricultural development. Their dedication to farming has not only improved food security but also driven economic growth and poverty reduction.
He noted that this year’s theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future”, resonate deeply with their efforts to promote climate resilience agricultural practices and support farmers in adopting climate change to produce enough food for consumption, agricultural raw materials for agro processing, factories and exports as well as creating employment especially for the youth. He urged all the people to continue to work together to create a more prosperous and sustainable agriculture sector.
The agric director further expressed his gratitude to all farmers, extension officers, and all stakeholders along the agricultural value chain who have supported agricultural development initiative. He mentioned how short dry spells affected crop development in the southern sector of the district. This calls for collaborative effort to promote climate resilience agricultural practices. He also highlights some key achievements of the district under the livestock sector.
Mr. Sualey Abubakari mentioned some challenges and constraints which affect the district agriculture which include inadequate extension staff, lack of secure funding for agricultural activities, breakdown of office vehicles, unsecured source of subsidised inputs to farmers, inadequate tractor services, rampant annual bush fires just to mention but a few. He therefore calls on the government agencies, traditional authorities, private sectors, and other development partners to collaborate effectively to boost agricultural production within the district to enhance the living conditions of our farmers.
Awards were given to hardworking farmers in so many categories. The overall district best farmer was awarded to Mr. Baakun Sunyazi from Gbampe with a tricycle, a pair of Wellington boots, 2 cutlasses, 1 knapsack sprayer, and a certificate.
