President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in July 2020, cut the sod for the construction of the Damongo Water Supply Project in the Savannah Region.

The current Damongo Water Supply System is based on water abstraction from an irrigation dam. However, for some past years now the plant has not been in operation due to siltation issues, resulting from unfavourable climatic conditions.

This situation has, thus, led to inhabitants of Damongo having to resort to private hand-dug wells and boreholes fitted with hand pumps for their water needs.

In view of these difficulties, as well as the result of population growth and the new status of Damongo as the capital of the Savannah Region, the Government has decided to provide a befitting Water Supply System to ensure the supply of reliable potable water to meet the water demands of Damongo and its environs, for the rapid development of the Savannah Region,” President Akufo-Addo disclosed.

The Government, the President indicated, had secured a credit facility of US$49,000,000.00 from the UK Export Finance and Deutsche Bank AG for the water project.

However explaining to journalists after Savannah Regional NPP Youth forum of the party in Damongo, the Regional Capital on Friday, April, 2, 2021 about the project, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Water Company Limited, Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, stated that the project is almost at a point of construction.

“Normally we have to do a development phase after sod cutting, we have to do the detailed designed work, which we have done, Canteen, Larabanga and Mole were not included, so the initial scope was what we worked on, but when we realized those settlements were not there we have to include them, it meant that we have to change the scope, but God willing four months we finished”, he said.

He added that, very soon they will begin with the value for money and immediately they finish with the value for money, they can now draw money from the Bank that is supporting it .

He stressed that ” if they don’t do with the value for money, its going to be difficulty to draw. The unit cost of items are not something that you have padding, but after value for money, we can spend the money, that is what we are going to do”.

According to him, they know sizes of the pipes, sizes of the pumps, the length of pipe network they are going to put, the position of the booster stations, all the technical issues are done and so once they finish with the value for money the construction will start.
