A free contraceptive service and sensitisation was organised in Bole in the Savannah Region on 26th September, 2023, as part of activities to mark this year’s World Contraception Day.
It was organised by the DKT International in collaboration with the Ghana Health Services.
Speaking at the event, Country Director of DKT International, Mr. Kwesi Yawson, said their fundamental mission revolves around elevating the prevalence of modern contraceptives, reducing maternal mortality rates and providing safe and high quality solutions for HIV/AIDS prevention.
Mr Yawson added that in the year 2012, DKT International embarked on a mission to Ghana with a clear objective that is to offer quality, affordable and effective contraceptive options and HIV prevention services to the people of Ghana.
The Country Director, DKT International mentioned that the theme for this year is World Contraceptive Day is “Family Planning, My Choice, My Freedom”.
He said the theme encapsulates the very essence of our mission, underscoring the significance of reproductive autonomy and individual decision-making within families.
Mr Yawson also mentioned that DKT International has chosen to commemorate this year’s event in the Savannah Region precisely Bole District to actively engaged with the community, civil society and various stakeholders to tackle the fundamental causes of teenage pregnancies.
Bole District Health Director Ndapewurche Hajia Fuseina Sulemana mentioned that Bole District has consistently been high with numbers of teenage pregnancies even though we have seen a consistent decline over the years.
Hajia Fuseina Sulemana said in 2021, the District recorded 35 teenagers between the ages of 10-14 years being pregnant, while 870 teenagers between the ages of 15-19 years being pregnant.
She added that in 2022 the figures reduced to 22 and 804 respectfully, and currently considering only January to June this year we have 12 girls aged 10-14 years and 415 girls aged 15-19 years being pregnant.
“And looking at the figures I do not see any change in the figures at the end of this year” she said.
Present at the durber ground were Chiefs and Queen mothers, stakeholders, opinion leaders, beauticians, tailors and youth groups.
