The Government of Ghana has secured funding for the implementation of a major water supply project aimed at improving access to potable water in the Savannah Region.
The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Adams Mutawakilu, announced this during a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Gonjaland Kingdom, the Yagbonwura, as part of a stakeholder engagement tour that also took him and his team to Busunu, Yapei, and Kusawgu.
According to Mr. Mutawakilu, the government has secured financial support from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union (EU), and Invest International for the implementation of the Tamale-Damongo Water Project. He noted that the project is expected to address the long-standing water challenges facing communities in the area.
He explained that before the commencement of the project, an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) would be conducted to identify potential challenges and ensure that all environmental and social concerns are adequately addressed.
The Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations at GWCL, Engineer Boakye Baadu, assured residents that the project would produce approximately 30 million gallons of water per day upon completion. He said the additional capacity would guarantee a reliable and sustainable water supply for Damongo and surrounding communities.
The Yagbonwura, Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation to the government and development partners for the intervention. He also called for prayers and Quranic recitations for the successful implementation of the project.
During a visit to the Busunuwura’s Palace, the chief, through the Molewura who spoke on his behalf, appealed to Mr. Mutawakilu for support in repairing an ambulance previously donated to the community but currently out of service.
Responding to the request, Mr. Mutawakilu pledged to provide a new engine to restore the ambulance to working condition. He also promised to donate a public address system to the palace to improve communication during community events.
At Yapei, the Yapeiwura appealed for the establishment of a Senior High School in the community. Mr. Mutawakilu assured residents that efforts would be made to address the request.
Speaking at Kusawgu, the GWCL Managing Director reiterated that the Tamale and Damongo water projects had remained on the drawing board for many years. However, he expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to improving water infrastructure would ensure their successful implementation.
To strengthen public awareness and monitoring of the project, three individuals have been appointed to engage the media and the public on developments relating to the water project. They are Dari Techi Afari Mudasiru, Zulkadeen Abdallah, and Saaka Munira.
