Global Communities in partnership with USAID has marked this year’s Hand washing Day which falls on October 15, every year at kalba  in the Sawla Tuna Kalba District of the Savannah region ,on the theme ; “Hand hygiene for all”.

The event attracted students, the Red Cross Society, community members, and the Ghana Health Service all coming to together to celebrate this day.

The celebration emphasized on the importance of handwashing as a way of preventing diseases, the necessity of using soap instead of only water, how everyone’s can benefit from washing their hands, and the key times for hand washing, including before and after eating.

Amidst brass band the students including the community members walked through the principal streets of Kalba with placards started from the Apostolic church, through to the market, then proceeded to the chief palace and ended at Hagen JHS were the event was held.

With the presence of the chief of Kalba Kalba wura “Garba” Amalia, the students sensitized the community members on the importance of hand washing through the display of poetry recital and drama.

Speaking at the occasion, the District Health promotion Officer for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, Mathew Zibo highlighted on the importance of hand washing as he said hand washing with soap and water is one of the best steps one can take to avoid being sick and spreading germs to others.

He said “hand hygiene for all” seeks to raise awareness on making soap and water available globally, especially in public places, schools and health care facilities.

It also calls on institutions and individuals to improve hand hygiene in covid 19 response that can curb the pandemic and ensure continues access to clean water and soap.

He again added that many germs that causes sickness are spread when we don’t wash our hand with soap and clean running water that is why hand washing is so important, especially at key times after using the wash room, when preparing food, after coughing or blowing your nose and before and after eating.

Mr. Emmanuel Dery, Nutrition officer for Kalba South District demonstrated the process of hand washing by given same opportunityto the students to replicate their demonstration.
