The Ghana Blind Union (GBU) has called on Ghanaians to respect their fundamental human rights and dignity as the Union campaigns for an all inclusive justice for all persons living in Ghana.
The Ghana Blind Union made this known in an engagement with some Executives of the Union in the Bole District on Wednesday 10, 2022 in the Savannah Region.
Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Zortorvi, who is the programs manager of the Ghana Blind Union said, we are doing a project titled “Human Rights Project”, and the aspect of the project is to look at all issues bothering on abuses and also empower our people to seek justice from the institutions of Justice.
She said they last identified some issues of violations especially those that have to do with marital or spousal abusive.
The Program Manager of the Union in addition said she in town to follow up on the progress of the general project specifically to follow up on whether t issues identified have been resolved.
“We have met with the leadership of the institution of Justice and we have also sensitized them with practical lives experiences of the persons with disability especially the visual impaired persons and they narrated some of the abuses they go through as part of their daily living in the communities”, She noted.
So we actually want to find out how those cases has been dealt with, she said
“The most challenging of the human rights violations of persons with disability is that of the women with disability being abused by their spouses, she indicated”.
She therefore cautioned that disability can happen to any person so there is the need for all individuals in the society to respect their rights, show them care and avoid all forms of stigmatization.
Mr. Salifu Adams, who is the secretary of the Ghana Blind Union in the Bole District stated that the last engagement with some stakeholders in the Bole District on the fundamental rights of the disability especially married visually impaired persons has seen the green light, that’s why their officials are here today for a follow-up.
He again said there were cases of marital issues in the Bole District which they tried to resolve, some were resolved but the case of a visually impaired woman and her husband in Bamboi has not been resolved appropriately, Mr Salifu added.
