Former President John Dramani Mahama said until we get things right there will not be an effective local governance in the country.
He said this is possible by decentralizing institutions and handing power to local level authority.
The Former President said this after he cast his vote at Bole District Assembly polling station on the District Assembly elections.
He promised that if made President in 2024 certain interventions will be put in place to improve local government system.
These interventions he mentioned among others include increasing the District Assembly Common fund from 5% to 7%, paying allowances to Assembly members for an effective discharge of their duties.
He pleaded with the electorate to patronize the exercise by coming out in their numbers to vote for development of their areas.
Responding to challenges of biometric verification systems, Former President urged the Electoral Commission to take serious look at the biometric machine as this has a tendency of causing confusion in the general elections.
The Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress said there have always being low turnout since the introduction of the District Assembly election concept.
He said he will not apportion blame for that development but however he thinks there is no effective communication on the District Assembly concept as compared to general election and urged that if more publicity is done there will be effectiveness and participation which he said include paying allowances to Assembly members.
