The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned consumers to be mindful of food and other products that they buy in the market to avoid consuming unwholesome, unregistered, and expired products.

Mr Martin Kusi, Northern, North- East and Savannah Regional Director of the FDA who spoke to Yagbon radio morning show host Abdul Fataw on May, 6, 2021, urged the public to avoid buying products which were unregistered by the FDA and asked them to also look out for information that indicated production and expiry dates for their own safety.

He said, “being careful of what you buy on the market helps you to avoid consuming products that are not safe and will compromise your health” and assured that, the authority would continue to exercise its mandate by enforcing the law to ensure the safety of all regulated products to promote public health.

Mr Kusi, called on the public to support the FDA by reporting any suspicion of food and medicines to any office of the FDA and assured them of confidentiality of complainants.

He called for consumers to read labels on products they purchase before use.

According to him, the labels normally contain detailed information about the product and reading them will not only direct the consumer on the use of it but could also serve as a prompter in case the product is being misused.

“When you purchase a product, it is very important for you to read the instruction on the product”, he indicated.

Mr. Meshack Gandaa, a Senior Regulatory Officer with the FDA called on the public to be on the look out when buying a product in in the market.

He added the checking the dates of manufacturing and expiring are paramount in safeguarding one’s health.

He urged the public not to disposed off expired products anyhow but must disposed them off safely so that they wouldn’t find their way back into the market.

“You can call us when you have expired products and you would be directed on how to disposed them off safely or with the support of the District Environmental Unit you would be guided on how to disposed off expired products safely to avert any harm”, he indicated.

It was reported on Tuesday May, 4, 2021, that over thousand cartons of expired energy drinks were improperly disposed off at a refuse dump on the Kiape-Sonyo road.

It was believed that the energy labelled as Ginger Flavoured Energy drink has been consumed by some people and had found their way into some homes therefore drawing the attention of the FDA to create awareness harmful effects of eating or drinking an expired product.

The FDA, Mr Gandaa noted will continue to educate the public on the need to adhere to basic safety measures to avert incidents of consuming unwholesome products.
