The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has held a day’s town hall meeting at the Sawla- Tuna-Kalba District for stakeholders to reflect on its “Promoting Social Accountability through Citizens’ Participation in Local Governance”.
The program in collaboration with National Commission on Civic Education and NALAG seeks to strengthen social accountability systems for Improve service delivery among MMDAs.
Program officer for CDD-Ghana Mr Balaarah Abdulai, said citizens must show more interest in holding local authorities accountable.
In a presentation, he Said consciousness is key to enable citizens know the procedure of holding their leaders accountable.
Mr Abdulai said some citizens do not know the approach to holding leaders accountable adding that wrong approach could cause some their jobs for the wrong reasons.
He also said the citizens are not ready to pay taxes as a result of failure for duty bearers to account for their resources.
He lamented how information access is difficult despite the passage of RTI law adding that website by local authority could help access information from MMDAs but most don’t have.
He said despite the third position by local government ministry performance report, but taking each single average the region has not really performed.
The District Director of Health, Mr Alhassan Abubakari, said health is a complex state of a human being than shouldn’t be viewed in health facility perspective.
He said health start from the individual depending how he or she take’s preventive health serious adding that one should take his own health serious done by putting your destiny in the hand of a health facility.
He called for collaboration between community and the health workers.
He urged communities to strengthen community health committees to deal with internal issues before it gets to the directors officers.
Madam Abiba Bakari soale, District Director of Education also lamented the lack of teachers in her Distract despite with the highest circuits and enrollment in the Region.
she said in the presence of all challenges she had recorded single numbers in BECE and WASSCE in the District attributing some of the successes to the Member of parliament for the constituency.
She regrets to announce low support from community members and called for support from community members.
Mr Timothy Anaful who represented the District Assembly said their mandate is decentralised democracy and development.
So Assembly Members are the representatives of the Assembly which called for all inclusiveness.
He said their doors are open for any enquiry into the Assembly activities.
The program is in 20 MMDAs across the country to conscentized citizens on their duty to hold MMDAs accountable.
