The Bole District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has marked its Annual Citizenship Week, with a call on young Ghanaians to be responsible citizens to help build a strong, vibrant and democratic Ghana.
The annual Citizenship Week is celebrated in all Regional and District offices of the NCCE across the country to create awareness of the civic responsibilities of the citizenry.
The commission sets aside a week each year, especially for the youth, on whom the future of the nation depends, to sensitise them to issues of national importance.
Christened: “ We are one, Ghana first”, the week is to create awareness among the youth of increased social indiscipline such as corruption, moral decadence and violence.
As part of activities planned for the week-long celebration, the Bole District of the NCCE had engaged with pupils from 35 selected schools on the need to foster national unity and live in harmony with others, respect authority and the elderly, abstain from bribery and corruption, protect and safeguard the environment, protect public property, respect rights of others among others to build upon the democratic credentials of Ghana.
Madam Anass Hawa, a Civic Education Officer with the Bole District office of the NCCE and Mr T.I Michael, Assistant Civic Education Officer interacted with pupils at the various schools.
The pupils were told to promote the prestige and good name of Ghana and respect the symbols of the nation and as well as uphold and defend the Constitution of the nation.
Madam Anass, told the children that they owed it a responsibility and obligation to Ghana, their communities, schools and parents to be disciplined .
She therefore, advised them to discharge their responsibilities properly to help build a better Ghana.
Madam Anass, also advised them to desist from acts of indiscipline such as littering the environment, and disrespecting the national flag, the elderly, their parents, teachers and their peers.
“As we celebrate the Citizenship Week, let us all remember to be law-abiding to help build a better Ghana,” she stressed.
Mr T.I Michael, assistant Civic Education Officer at the Bole District NCCE, said the NCCE was set up under the 1992 Constitution to educate citizens on the Constitution and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
According to him, the Citizenship Week creates the environment for people in leadership positions, professionals, academia and accomplished citizens to interact with pupils across the country to impart the virtues of good citizenship and the need to uphold democratic governance to them.
