The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has engaged stakeholders in the Savannah Region on the new vehicle registration system set to begin in 2026.

Speaking at the sensitization program at Bole, on Thursday, 4th December 2025, Director for the Driver Training, Testing and Licensing (DTTL) division at the DVLA Mr. Kafui Semevor, stated that the DVLA is introducing a number plate that takes away the year of registration from the numbering format.

Mr. Kafui, added that there are security features that are going to be introduced on the new number plate which includes the radio frequency identification (RFID), this is to enable the DVLA to have some minimal information of the vehicle and the owner on the plate so that at everytime the plate can be verified by their officers and also the law enforcers.

The Director of training, emphasize that the new number plate is also supposed to enhance security and also public safety.

“In the process of this reforms we are going to have two categories of registration, those who are registering for the first time and vehicles that has been registered already that the will be registering” he said.

Mr. Kafui Semevor, noted that for those who will be doing the re-registration the DVLA is inviting them to start a process they call on-boarding now and you can do it before June 2026 when they start the re-registration.

The on-board requires that a person goes to the DVLA office with their vehicle and documents and they will verify the documents and the vehicle and also capture their biometrics and images of the vehicle and move them to their active files.

So this process helps the DVLA to properly identify the owners of the vehicles and so we are doing this because we used to have paper files for this vehicles, this files has been scanned but they need to clean the data before they use it to the re-registration.

So it is compulsory for everybody who has a vehicle that is already been registered to do the on-boarding and it is also necessary because if you have a vehicle today and you have done transfer and all you have is the application for transfer you don’t have proof of ownership of that vehicle, you need to do the on-boarding to obtain what they call the certificate of title and then you also obtain the vehicle registration card.

This two documents are very necessary for you to proof ownership and so they are encouraging the public to take the opportunity to do the on-boarding and can be done at any DVLA offices once your vehicle is there, you are available and your documents are too are there you can just drive in and do it.

On-boarding doesn’t come at a cost but you are paying for the certificate that is issued and then you pay for the card that is issued to you.

Some stakeholders, including Gbansiga Kansawurch, told Yagbon News that the explanations provided convinced them of the system’s benefits. They commended the DVLA and pledged their full support for its implementation.
