The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly in the Savannah Region has organised this year’s farmers day at Kong under the theme:” Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future”.

In his welcome address, HRM Kongwura Adamu Seidu Jinkurige (I), acknowledged all dignitaries and stakeholders for choosing Kong for this year’s celebration.

HRM Kongwura noted that the people of Kong are predominantly peasant farmers and the crops they cultivate are cassava, rice, yam, millet, guinea corn, maize, beans among others.

The Kongwura, encourage farmers in his traditional area to take advantage of the government program and policy to improve livelihood and food production especially the Nkoko Nkitikiti program.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to the government to work on Kong road and also post more teachers to the Kong Primary School.

The Sawla District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Seidu Mohammed, congratulated all hard working farmers and Fisher men’s IN the district.

The District Director, mentioned that the department of agriculture has also made significant strides in extension delivery, and this year farmers across the district benefited from extension services through field demonstration, farmer field schools, training on climate -smart agriculture and improved livestock management.

Mr. Seidu Mohammed, added that 2025 production year has not been without challenges and erratic rainfall patterns affected crop establishment and reduced yields IN some communities.

Again limited mechanization services, high cost of inputs, outbreaks of pest and diseases and inadequate access to credit continues to affect the full potential of our farmers.

Our extension staff strength also remains inadequate and considering the size of the district and so we continue to appeal for more human and logistical support.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Hon. Saaka Sinkina, commended all award winners and the farmers for contributing towards the department of the district and the country at large.

The DCE speaking at the program stated that government’s agriculture program of Feed Ghana initiative is still in progress and the government will continue to support farmers with improved seeds, fertilizer, training and mechanization services all in attempt to increase food production and household food security.

The DCE added that the Nkoko Nkitikiti project which was launched by John Mahama last November in Kumasi is to tackle the country’s heavy reliance on imported poultry.

Hon. Sinkina noted that 3 million birds to be distributed at 6 weeks old, 60, 000 household farmers across the 276 constituencies will benefit each getting 50 chicks plus feed and technical support and 50 anchor farmers each receiving 80, 000 birds, logistics and housing to produce 4 million birds.

On bush fires, the DCE said once again the dry season is here with us and he wants to use this opportunity to advice that we should all be mindful of our daily activities to avoid fire disasters in the district.

“I say this because several people have invested millions of cedis to cultivate farm products which if care is not taken all can be lost by this bad masters”.

The overall District Best Farmer went to Mr.Nicholas Fian-naa who took home a motor cycle, knapsack sprayer, Cutlass, radio set and a certificate of recognition.

Mr. Nicholas Fian-naa speaking to Yagbon News thanked the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the initiative.

He added that this moment is not just a celebration of his had work but a recognition of the dedication and passion that every farmer contribute to the growth of our community and nation

According to him farming is a business and thus called on the youth to engage in farming.
