Yaa Naa embarks on a historic visit to Jakpa Palace. The overlord of Yagbon Kingdom, Jira Yagbonwura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale warmly received the King and overlord of Dagbon Kingdom,Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II, in his palace on Sunday 16 February 2025 at the jakpa Palace.

Delivering a speech by Kpembiwura on behalf of the King and Overlord of Gonja, mentioned, as they gather here today, it is essential to acknowledge the rich history that binds our people together, a history steeped in tradition, mutual respect, and shared aspirations for the future, and both Dagbon and the Gonja Kingdoms, boasts of deep-rooted cultural heritage that stand the testament of resilience and sustainability, and with these attributes, we have the potentials to lead our communities towards greater development and prosperity.

Jira Yagbonwura added that this historic visit will rekindle the opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest, economic development, security, education, and the advancement of our youth, and they should explore avenues to align our resources and strengths in a way that will uplift the development of both kingdoms, and so by investing in our people and unearthing their potentials, we can create a legacy that will be felt by the present and future generations.

Your Royal Majesty, as leaders, we must also be conscious of the societal challenges we face today such as conflicts, economic disparities, and the impacts of climate change, and by coming together, sharing ideas and engaging in constructive dialogue, we can forge effective strategies that address these challenges while preserving the rich tapestry of our cultural identities.

Yagbonwura also noted that it is however, crucial to emphasize that chieftaincy succession remains a significant source of conflict in Ghana, particularly in the five regions of the north and these conflicts are notably pronounced in communities that were traditionally acephalous, where the legitimacy of those eligible to ascend to chieftaincy is often contested.

Unfortunately, government efforts to codify customs, practices, and usages across all traditional areas especially regarding eligibility for chieftaincy have been minimal, Article 270 of the 1992 Constitution assigns the responsibility of addressing these issues to the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs, and It is imperative that government, through the National House of Chiefs, undertakes the codification of customs, practices, and usages to clearly delineate the legitimate heirs to positions of authority. Such intervention is vital for addressing the structural causes that contribute to power succession disputes.

In light of this, we must collectively advocate for and prioritize the urgent codification of our traditions, and practices, ensuring clarity in leadership succession.

Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II emphasized the long-standing relationship between the two kingdoms, particularly through intermarriages and shared cultural heritage.

He stressed the need for collaborative efforts in promoting peace, education, and economic empowerment.

The Dagbon King also called for initiatives to combat illiteracy, reduce school dropout rates, and develop skills training programs, particularly for young girls, to prevent rural-urban migration for low skilled jobs.

He also encouraged the youth to see themselves as agents of positive change for the growth of their communities.

Both leaders expressed their commitment to deepening the bond between the two traditional authorities and working towards lasting unity and development.
