Dr. Anthony Adofo Ofosu, Deputy Director of the Ghana Health Services, has urged health practitioners to show empathy for the sick to aid their speedy recovery.

He said they needed to treat patients with dignity and respect, adding that their rights must be upheld.

Dr Anthony was addressing a mini durbar at the Bole District Hospital when he embarked on a regional tour on Tuesday, July 25,2023 to get first hand information about activities and performances of health facilities in the Savannah Region.

The working visit to the Savannah Region was to inspect health projects and acquaint himself with various challenges confronting the health sector.

He said as health workers, their focus should be on helping to bring relief and comfort to the sick.

He asked them to work hard to maintain high standards of professionalism.

This, he said, was necessary to enable them to win public support, trust and confidence.

According to him there is the need for nurses and other health professionals to adopt positive attitudes to work.

They should do everything to make the hospitals, health centres and clinics friendly to patients as he argued that at times just a smile towards the sick is enough to make an impact.

He also advised the health workers to desist from asking NHIS holders to pay unapproved charges that some healthcare providers charge them before or after receiving treatment.

According to the Deputy Director General “Some health workers, sometimes do take advantage of NHIS holders and extort money from them.

He cautioned health care providers to desist extorting of monies from vulnerable clients, noting that, the scheme will not spare them when found guilty.
