Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Benjamin Buxton, the Bole District Police Commander of the Ghana Police Service has advised road users to be responsible to prevent avoidable road crashes and needless fatalities.

He said road safety remained a shared and collective responsibility and urged commuters, pedestrians, motorists, and drivers to obey road traffic regulations.

In an interview with Yagbon radio on December 22, 2021 on road safety precautions, DSP Buxton noted about 90 per cent of road crashes were due to human error, and, therefore, entreated drivers to observe road signs and also adhere to traffic rules and regulations in addition to avoiding over-speeding.

“Pedestrians must also endeavour to use designated areas when crossing the roads”, he added.

Commenting on road accidents on the Kumasi- Wa highway which falls within his jurisdiction of control, he said the Police Service had scaled-up road safety education, saying, very soon it would undertake enforcement on the highway.

“Last week we were at Bamboi to sensitise drivers on road safety precautions. We would soon intensify enforcement on reckless driving to bring sanity on the road”, he stated.

He said road users needed to obtain knowledge on road signs and safety precautions.

He said basic knowledge and adherence to road safety protocols would help reduce the unnecessary crashes that led to the loss of several lives daily.

He said irresponsible road behaviour such as over speeding and lack of crash helmets, among others, remained a threat to human lives and charged residents to desist from them.

DSP Buxton said ensuring accident-free Christmas remained a collective responsibility of every road user and urged the populace to be advocates of their safety.
