The Sawla District Police Command has confirmed the death of 9 people in a vehicular accident on the Sawla-Wa road in the Savannah Region.

The Wednesday morning accident which occured at Gindabuo also resulted in injuries to 9 other persons.

The accident involved a VIP bus heading towards Wa and driven by one Baba Nuhu, 32, lost control of the steering wheel and veered off the road and hit a tree before landing in a ditch killing nine on the spot.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.

The injured are also receiving treatment at Wa Regional hospital, according to the Sawla District Police Commander, ASP Degraft Armah Adjei.

The Commander explained that preliminary investigation points to the fact that the driver was dosing off and that might led to his lost of control of the steering wheel.

He said the accident happened at the outskirts of Sawla, precisely in-between Gindabuo and Kulmasa Police barrier.

“So far we have registered 9 dead and then 9 are injured. They have all been rushed to the hospital for treatment,” ASP Degraft told Chipo Kwaku of Yagbon Radio.

He gave the breakdown of the dead as 6 adults and 3 children.

The Sawla District Police Commander seized the opportunity to once again admonish all road users to be very alert and abide by all road traffic regulations whiles on the road, especially as the Yuletide approaches.

Road traffic fatalities seem to be on the rise, with 1,250 lives lost for the first five months of 2021.

This represents a 26.32% increase over the same period in 2020, with the trend suggesting a record high annual figure by the end of 2021.

Persons who survived the crashes but sustained various injuries for the period were 1, 309, a rise of 26.72%.

This means eight lives perish on the country’s roads daily.
