The Minister in charge of the Savannah Region Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril, has given an assurance that the he will streamline the activities of illegal miners (galamsey) to make their operations more decent.

He said he would transform their operations to migrate them into a more formal process, warning that those who would resist any move to be transformed risked sanctions.

Mr Saeed made this known in a press conference organised by the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council on Tuesday March 30,2021, at Damongo and indicated that he was committed to sanitising galamsey.

For him, it was important to maintain the country’s forests to preserve wildlife, for which reason he called for a regulations of illegal mining activities in the region.

According to him small scale miners who are licensed will be allowed to to operate in the mining communities in the region.

He added that royalties will be paid by the miners which will be in the advancement of the region.

Mr Saeed added that a task force yet to be inaugurated and chaired by the Savannah Regional Police Commander DCOP Bediako will be on the look to ensure that dug out pits are reclaim to protect the the land from depletion.

He noted that royalties are currently not paid by the miners in the region and hence the need to reform their activities.

On charcoal burning on commercial quantities and illegal felling of trees ,the Minister expressed displeasure at the rate at which these activities are destroying the forest cover in the region.

He directed that all activities of illegal logging and charcoal burning in the region be stopped in the next four weeks as he urged the media to be on the look out.
