The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Bole District has launched its week and month awareness program on the 24th of October, 2025. The theme for this year’s NHIS month is; covering all persons and not leaving out anybody.
The Savannah regional operations manager, Mr. Mahama Sakara speaking to Yagbon Radio News during the program highlighted the theme and objectives of the week and month awareness program of the NHIA. He recounted that, starting from 20th October 2025 to the end of the year, thus 31st December, they have a series of activities they will carry out.
He reiterated that the theme for this year’s NHIS month is covering all persons and not leaving out anybody. That their mind is to see how all Ghanaians will have access to free healthcare using the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card and that is the main reason for the awareness they are creating, he stressed.
He again urged everybody to take advantage of this initiative and get on board and those who want renewals of their cards should renew, and those who don’t have cards at all should come and register.
The Operation Manager added that they also have other opportunities where they are going to wever the waiting period of one month for everybody. Once your card is expired, a year or more, just come and renew, and you can be able to get access to healthcare services, he said.
Mr. Mahama Sakara further expressed that you can register your card at your own confort by using the code *929# and also they have NHIS application software that one can download on playstore, install it and follow the processses to register without necessarily coming to the NHIA office for registration once you have your Ghana card.
He added that, on the *929# code, they have “automatic renewal” and when you subscribe to it, it automatically renew your card when it expired once you have the required amount in your wallet.
During his submission, he highlighted that in terms of population coverage, there is great improvement and that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has a target and that by 2030, everybody should have been covered health wise. Thus, the universal health coverage he called it.
He said that the main target for now is 80% across the board ( the region, the nation, and the world). That targeting 100% is a tedious task, but hitting 80% is a plus in every country. So Ghana NHIS is targeting 80% of our total population. As of September, they have gotten up to 56% as a region of the targeted number. So they hope and pray that, by the end of the year, they hit the 80%.
Mr Sakara noted that sometimes it is not about the coverage, but it is about access and and so he encouraged the public to utilise their NHIS cards to access healthcare and not result in self-medication, and that is their happiness as the coverage goes high. In Savannah Region, as of today, is about 56% of the total population per the 2025 population figures, he mentioned.
He further acknowledged that all their credential facilities are supposed to give people free services, although it depends on the level of the facility. You don’t need to pay any amount when you visit the facility once it is a service that is covered at their level.
He encouraged people to report to the NHIA office immediately they are asked to pay any amount when they visit the facility, they are ready to act on every complaint or feedback as they’re ready to lift the scheme to a level admirable by all, he clarified.
