UNDP empowers border communities in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District

The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Savannah region has on Wednesday, 20 August 2025 received office and Livelihoods equipment from UNDP with funding support from Denmark, Luxembourg and Republic of Korea.

In a welcome address, Hon. Saaka Sinkina, the DCE for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, noted that they thank their development partners for recognizing Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district for this kind of support.

Hon. Saaka Sinkina, noted that the district has a lot of challenges and an intervention like this will go along way to reduce poverty.

He added that, most of this beneficiary communities are still facing basic social amenities, the road networks are not good, access to portable water, no electricity, and they live in absolutely poverty.

Again the DCE, mentioned that as district assembly they will do all what they can to support this communities to maximize the usage of this equipments.

“We are very grateful and we will help the communities to maximize the usage” he said.

Dr. Edward Ampratwum- lead, inclusive growth and accountable governance UNDP, speaking during the handing over of the office and Livelihoods equipments at the premises of the assembly, said it is their shared commitment to promoting sustainable peace, stability and social cohesion as we officially handover

livelihoods support tools and office equipment to enhance livelihoods opportunities for women and youth, and contribute to efforts towards preventing organized crime, illicit economies, violent extremism in at – risk communities.

Dr. Edward added that the growing spread of violent extremism and evidence of the spillover effect from the Sahel

region towards the Gulf of Guinea States (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo) and the dynamics of internal conflicts continue to pose significant threats to the progress of development, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of women and youth in our communities.

UNDP with funding support from the governments of Denmark and

Luxembourg, Republic of Korea, and Japan is implementing the project titled “Preventive Approach to Protecting Development in the Gulf of Guinea (Prevention Facility) project” aimed at building sustainable peace to prevent community conflicts and violent extremism in border and cross-border areas.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to people—especially

the inclusion of women and youth from vulnerable communities.

In addition UNDP, is here today to support governments efforts through the donation of 10 motorbikes, 12 tricycles, 2 Shea nut grinding machines, 2 Shea nut crushers, and 4 groundnut Shellers, 2 laptops and 2 printers to support Sawla – Tuna – Kalba and Tempane districts and women and youth in select at-risk border and cross – border communities to enhance livelihoods opportunities and support the efforts towards building cohesive societies that prevents radicalization to violent extremism.

Speaking on the beneficiary, Mr. Simon Mwaasor, thank UNDP with funding support from the governments of Denmark and

Luxembourg, Republic of Korea, and Japan is implementing the project.

He promised that they will use the Livelihoods equipments that will to reduce poverty in their communities. But Mr. Simon also appeal for more to come again.
