NORTHCODE -Ghana, has in partnership with the Sawla -Tuna-Kalba District Assembly with students drawn from Chagbalanyiri D/A JHS on Thursday 5th June 2025 organized a clean-up exercise in Sawla township, around the Sawla dam to mark this year’s World Environment Day.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Ending The Plastic Pollution”.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Dokurugu Andrew Yahaya, the technical lead for NORTHCODE- Ghana mentioned that, World Environment Day is celebrated across the World on the 5th of June every year as an occasion to create awareness about pressing environment issues and also use as an opportunity to create platforms and to mobilize the global community to take action around pressing environmental issues.

Mr, Dokurugu stated that World Environment Day was established in the year 1972 and since the global community has been celebrating this day.

The technical lead for NORTHCODE- added that plastic pollution is one of the major environmental challenges facing us and plastics has polluted Rivers, Lakes, Oceans, Land, Soil and everywhere.

“So the damage by plastics is everywhere and only we can stop it, plastics pollution is human creation and it’s not a natural thing, human beings manufacture plastics and we use plastics and we also pollute the environment with plastics so only we can reverse this damage by a behavior change”he said.

Mr Dokurugu Andrew added that this year’s theme is to get everybody to think about it and start mobilizing for community action to deal with it, and dealing with plastics pollution is resting on four pillars and that is reject, reduce, re-use and recycling.

Each and everyone of must take on this message and make a personal decision to start doing the right thing and as a few people start and many join sooner or later our collective efforts of doing things differently will create a solution.

Sponsors for this year’s World Environment Day are IUCU, A ROCHA GHANA, WACSI and WILDE GANZEN.
