The president of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama has cut sod to cover three regions in Ghana, which include Bono East region, Savannah region, and Upper West region under the “Big Push” project project.
The sod cutting was executed at Sawla in the Savannah Region on Wednesday, 5th November 2025.
Speaking at the ceremony, the president acknowledged that the sod cutting covers the reconstruction of the road from Wenchi to Wa and that the road is going to be a newly reconstructed road to adjust the traffic that it carries as an international route to the countries in Burkina Faso and Mali.
H.E. John Dramani Mahama further expressed that the sod cutting represents the reconstruction of the Fufulso – Sawla road.
He recounted that the Sawla – Fufulso road was funded under his past administration with a loan from Africa Development Bank.
Unfortunately, due to lack of maintenance, many parts of the road have been deteriorated so the same contractor assigned to work on the Wenchi – Wa road is the same contractor to work on the Fufulso – Sawla road, he emphasized.
During his submission, he mentioned that they are at Sawla this very day to do more than just sod cutting.
That they are here to open a new corridor of process, to recollect regions markets and families, to renew the promise of inclusive development and to affirm that every part of Ghana deserves modern infrastructure, dignity and opportunity.
“This event signifies the start of the rehabilitation of the Wenchi – Sawla road to Wa. A flagship project under the “Big Push” National Infrastructure Program and a cornerstone of the 24-hour economy policy”.
The president also wished to repeat his regret and apology to the people of Ghana. With the start of the “Big Push” project, the whole of Ghana is going to be a construction site for the next two years.
He said wherever you go in the country, roads will be constructed. So he urges Ghanaians to be patient and to accept the inconvenience. Within 24 months after the launch of the “Big push” project, Ghana will have the best roads in West Africa, he stated.
He again highlighted some challenges encountered as a result of poor roads, which include travelling difficulties, an increment of road accidents, and armed robbery attacks due to slow travel, among others.
According to the president, the first roads selected are the most important roads in all the regions as they launched the “Big Push” project program.
He said that they are beginning with roads that connect regional capitals to regional capitals, some of the roads that connect district capitals to district capitals and afterwards they will work towards other aterial roads that join the main roads such as the Kong – Tuna – Kalba roads, he mentioned.
On his part, he reiterated that for his own hometown Bole, the contructor has been asked to rehabilitate Bole Town Road. So, moving forward, he will be cutting the sod for Bole Town Road and the reconstruction of the Bole – Chache road.
That the Bole – Chache road is important because the Cote d’Ivoire authorities already constructed a brand new bridge over the Black Volta. So there’s a need to reconstruct the road to become an international route for trade between Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, he said.
H.E. John Dramani Mahama concluded his submission by saying that the project is a shared trust between the government and the citizens. So let us protect it, avoid encroachment on the road, avoid overloading of trucks and most importantly, let us avoid putting illegal speed rumps on the road as the contructors will install properly engineered speed rumps on the road. The “Big Push” project is about fairness and equity as it ensures that the North and the South develop together. Let us commit to turn this transformation into a visible and lasting reality, he said.
