The NPP constituency secretary for Sawla- Tuna-Kalba in the Savannah Region, Mr Laamiitey Jonathan Gilbieri, has criticized former President and presidential candidate for the largest opposition party in the 2020 general elections John Mahama for indicating that the 2024 general elections will be a do-or-die affair.

Mr Jonathan, described the comments by the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in last year’s elections as most unfortunate.

The former president speaking on Techiman-based Akina FM’s on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, as part of his thank-you tour, said “This current President has made elections life and death for him, he uses his Delta forces and invisible forces enrolled in the security agencies.

“You see some Military and Police officers and ask whether these are indeed officers. They wear earrings and all sort of things and you can’t tell whether this is a police officer or a soldier.

“We have learnt our lessons from happenings during the 2020 polls. The 2024 elections will be won or lost at the polling station. It will be do-or-die at the polling stations. The right thing must be done during the polls. We will win the elections at the polling station and won’t wait for collation centre results nor petition the Supreme Court if aggrieved,” he said.

Reacting to these comments by the former president, Jonathan told Yagbon News that it doesn’t auger well for the nation to hear such comments from a former Head of State .

He said that former president John Mahama understands the principles of democracy better and hence he doesn’t expect such utterances from him.

According to him,it is not a matter of equalization as he indicated Ghanaians widely condemned a similar comment made by president Nana Addo, the then presidential candidate for the NPP during the 2008 general elections.

He indicated that former president John Mahama must own up for his unfortunate comment and render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians.
