MP not happy with Minister of Education for failing to attend House invitation

Member of Parliament for the Sawla- Tuna-Kalba Constituency in the Savannah Region was not happy that the Education Minister was stalling and undermining the work of Parliament by failing to honour invitation to the House to answer questions.

The lawmaker claimed that Parliamentary questions are tools they use to seek information or to press for action, hence the Minister was therefore obliged to explain and defend the work, policy decisions and actions of his Ministry through these questions.

The frustrated Member of Parliament was of the view that the Minister has no justification abandoning parliamentary business.

His frustration was in connection with the inability of the Minister to honour an invitation to the House to answer an Urgent Question which stood in his name asking to know the reason for teachers shortage in his constituency, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba.

According to the MP, he only received calls twice from the office of the minister telling him of the Minister’s inability to honour the invitation.

The MP, Hon. Andrew Dari Chiwitey, has on several occasions appealed for more teachers to be posted to the area ,but to no avail.

He said the lack of teachers in the area was making education unattractive and negatively affecting teaching and learning.

According to him there are graduates with diploma’s and degrees who sat for the teacher licensure exams and passed and yet are not posted.

The MP said the situation was dire in his constituency and called for immediate intervention from stakeholders.
