The Ghana Co-Operative Butchers Association (GCBA) of the Savannah Regional chapter has said it will embark on an exercise to register all genuine butchers and meat sellers in the markets and issue them with identity cards (ID).
According to the General Secretary of the Savannah region Association, Mahama Seidu, the exercise would also enable the GCBA to know the exact number of
butchers and meat sellers in each market throughout the Region.
In an interview with Yagbon radio on the sidelines of their activities,Mr Mahama indicated that members have to pay fifty Ghana cedis to be issued an identity card.
He urged all butchers in the Region to ensure that only genuine butchers and meat handlers registered for future identification purposes and to remove those with dubious characters from the meat trade.
Mr Mahama explained that the exercise had become necessary following a question posed by the Food and Drugs Board as to who was a butcher and the plan by the regional Association to license all butchers selling meat in the market to eliminate quacks.
He said members should be able to produce their ID cards on demand or display them in their shops for the inspection of the authorities and customers.
