Ghana’s Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana, has organized a blood donation exercise in the Savannah Region to beef up the blood banks in the region as an expression of love to humanity on Valentine’s Day.

The exercise was held at the Sawla Senior High School and Bole Senior High School.

The exercise produced 238 units of blood, which will be stocked at the Sawla Hospital and Bole Municipal hospital in the Savannah region.

Speaking to Yagbon News during the exercise, Mr. Abombila Mathew, territory controller for MTN in Savannah Region, mentioned that the exercise is known as the “MTN Save Your Life Campaign” it’s a blood donation exercise that they carry out every year on valentine’s day.

We in the MTN say that the best way to show love is by donating blood to save a life, this exercise started 15 years ago when the national blood bank called on MTN and cooperate Ghana to assist in collecting blood to restock the blood banks across the country and since then MTN has become the biggest cooperate blood donor in the country.

Every year MTN Ghana do this across the 16 regions in the country including their head office and fortunately this year MTN Ghana has collaborate with Cal Bank and so this year they have bleeding centers at the Cal Bank national head office and MTN house as well.

“So we have a total of 47 bleeding centers across the country and in Savannah region we are doing two bleeding centers, that is the Sawla SHS and Bole SHS”.

The target for Savannah Region this year is to do 250 pints of blood to assist the regional blood bank and so we having officials from the Sawla government hospital and Bole Municipal hospital assisting them.

The reason MTN Ghana choose schools is that they are the easy to reach target and so MTN Ghana is encouraging the “Save Your Life Campaign” from SHS is because this is where the idea of patriotism is and when we start from here the students carry it along after school and so across the country their target has always been SHS.

Dr. Barlobey Tettey Eric, the blood donor organizer at the Sawla Hospital thanked MTN Ghana for the initiative and said it would help stock the blood bank for emergency services delivery.

Dr. Tettey Eric indicated that the Hospital consumes a lot of units of blood in a month, most of which go to delivery cases.

He therefore, entreated the public to walk voluntarily in to health facilities to donate blood to help guarantee enough blood at the facilities.

Abubakari Awal, a student of Sawla SHS, who donated blood said he was happy to be part of the exercise because he would be contributing to saving a life.
