Dr . R. O Tetteh, the Chief Executive Officer of Osa Green Care Clinic operating in Bole in the Savannah Region, has called on landlords to construct in-house toilets for tenants to curb open defecation.
He said open defecation has been identified as a major factor in the outbreak and spread of communicable diseases.
Dr. Tetteh said this in an interview with Yagbon News.
He mentioned that typhoid, ulcer and skin related diseases were on a high scale in the area as a result of open defecation.
Dr. Tetteh said with the provision of house-holds latrines, tenants would not have any justification to defecate openly in the communities.
He called on traditional rulers, stakeholders and opinion leaders to ensure that households have access to laterines to promote environmental cleanliness and hence curb the spread of water related diseases.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, approximately 17.7 per cent of Ghana’s population defecates in the open, owing to lack of befitting toilet facilities.
This meant that the issue of non-availability of health infrastructures, such as toilets, remained a major health concern in many parts of the country, particularly the rural areas.
The issue of poor sanitation in the Bole town is becoming alarming as a good percentage of its citizens openly defecate, statistics from Osa Green Care Clinic in a survey, has revealed.
This, Dr. Tetteh observed, was capable of thwarting the country’s desire to attaining the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG6) by 2030.
He also urged the people of Bole to make medical check-ups a routine to prevent future health complications.
He stated that, during medical check-ups, health personnel are able to identify hidden or underlying diseases and provide relevant medical care and advice to avert complications.
“Regular checks are very important. They prevent a lot of difficult complications in the human body. It is only when you get to know whatever is happening inside your body that you can take steps to prevent potential complications,” he said.
Dr. Tetteh advised the public to avoid patronage of unauthorized and uncertified herbal concoctions as their effect could be disastrous.
He said the public must always ensure that they patronize the services or facilities of professional herbal health practitioners to avoid abuse, stressing that “herbal medicines are efficacious but if you buy fake or unapproved herbal medicine you could be affected. Don’t go and buy sickness from fake herbal practitioners”.
He urged the residents of Bole to patronise Osa Green Care Clinic for all their health needs as they were well-equipped with the state-of-the-art technology to ensure proper and timely health care delivery.
“We have all the healthcare equipment you can think of as we operate 24-hours daily .
