The NDC’s Communications Officer of the Savannah Region says majority of Ghanaians will be disenfranchised if the Electoral Commission insists on using only the Ghana card and a valid passport as requirements for the new register.
According to Malik Basintale, a good number of the country’s population owns the old voters ID which can be as a requirement by the EC in the compilation of the controversial new voters register.
He added that thousands of Ghanaians in the Savannah Region and Ghana at large have not registered for the National Identification Card.
Speaking on Yagbon Radio “Tea cup”, on Friday, June 12, 2020, he said that “the number of people captured by the NIA so far is less than the people who voted in 2016.”
Hence using the Ghana card or a passport will hinder the registration exercise which in the long run will take away the constitutional right of the people to vote.
By the constitution, Basintale said “people are entitled to be given the opportunity to register and the EC must undertake programs to expand the register”.
His comments come after the NPP in Northern Ghana held a press conference in Tamale yesterday accusing the NDC in the North of preparing the grounds for disrupting the well – advertised New Voters Register. ”
“These warmongers who have shamefully revised their campaign from ” No New Register to No Register without old voter ID are trotting across the region to plot violence”, Mr. Issah Mohammed told Abdul Fatawu on the same ” Tea cup” show.
Mr. Issah accused the NDC of always engaging the services of Northern NDC anytime they want to foment trouble .
He added that the people of Northern Ghana are grateful to Nana Akufo Addo for the carving of Savannah Region, which was denied them by John Mahama.
